I used my bike today for the first time in a year. I find myself looking at the pavement more than the traffic, it is unconscious but I guess it is because of what caused my accident – apparently ‘bache’ translates to English as ‘pocket’, but I usually translate it as ‘hole’ when explaining. Out of observation, I would say that over 60% of holes are on bike lanes – and there are not more because there are not many bike lanes. I would say that, in total, about 90% of holes are on the parts that of the roads where we bikers use, i.e. the very left hand side of roads.
I guess we are not profitable enough to make our journeys safe… or maybe, the companies we buy our supplies from are not too interested in lobbying local councils or governments like the oil companies do…
And, despite of all this, there ‘are’ a lot more bikers now than, say, four years ago, when I used my bike as my only means of transport and I was almost always on my own, alone in the midst of cars buses and lorries. Today, there was always at least another cyclist on sight, at all times.
