On the 4th of June this year, 2008, exactly 4 months ago today, 12 of us set off from London to Brighton, by bike, in order to participate in a protest against the arms trade.
Going to Brighton by bike was part of our action. We were taking a sound system with us.
About half way the sound system had an accident and the tandem that was carrying it had to be put on a van, so we were 10 left on our bikes.
Then when we were just 14 miles away from Brighton, Marie was hit by a car, then dragged along for about 20 metres under another car. Leaving just a trail of blood. I called an ambulance, unable to believe or maybe see the obvious. The police came well before the ambulance. I ended up inside an ambulance and by the time I came out there was a golden “blanket” covering Marie.
We gave witness statements, twice in my case. I hadn’t seen the first car hit Marie, only the second one dragging her, so at the beginning I thought there had been only one car involved. When I read my statement back, I thought it was clear that the car that dragged her along was not breaking hard enough to leave tyre marks on the road.
And now, almost 4 months after that, we are told that the Crown Prosecution Service will not charge any of the two drivers. merzak thinks it is sickening. I’m not sure I expected anything different …
Marie.. Nice
Only trying.
